Dr Michael Suen received his undergraduate degree from the University of New South Wales. He completed a Master of Surgery in Colorectal Surgery from the University of Sydney, with his dissertation focused in the management of bowel obstruction from bowel cancer using colonic stents. He obtained further fellowship training via the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) in advanced laparoscopic (key-hole) colorectal surgery for bowel cancer and pelvic floor management. He has particular interest in bowel cancer screening and management, establishing the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program in the colorectal department of Concord Repatriation Hospital. He also has subspecialty colorectal interest in defaecatory disorders such as faecal incontinence and obstructive defaecation, and endorses modern minimally invasive treatment for haemorrhoids (HAL-RAR), fistula-in-ano and other proctological conditions.
Dr Suen is a senior lecturer in the University of Sydney and supervisor in surgical training in teaching hospitals. He is the current senior Vice President of the Australian Chinese Medical Association and actively participates in public health education in the Chinese community.
Dr Michael Suen is fluent in Catonese and Mandarin, in addition to English
